We stayed at The Standard in Bangkok, and I have not stopped thinking about the building.
It sits inside King Power Mahanakhon, the tower Ole Scheeren designed with the pixelated cut spiralling up one side, as though someone had carved a ribbon out of the facade block by block. Seventy-seven floors. You can see it from most of the city and it reads differently depending on which direction you come from.
The hotel shares the tower with the Ritz-Carlton Residences. Something about a building holding a hotel and people's actual homes at the same time stuck with me.
The rooms, the colour, the staff. I did not want to check out.
The photo is from an afternoon out shopping, which is the other thing Bangkok is very good at.
